The Communication Arts Advertising Competition is the most prestigious competition for creativity in advertising. Any advertising project printed, published or aired for the first time from May 2013 through May 2014 is eligible. Selected by leading creative directors, art directors and writers, the winning entries will be distributed worldwide in the Communication Arts Advertising Annual, in print and on the iPad, and on commarts.com, assuring important exposure to the creators of this outstanding work. CA’s Award of Excellence is one of the most-coveted awards in the industry. If chosen, winning places recipients in the highest ranks of your profession.

CA_AwardOfExcellence_Web-300x300Each winning entrant will receive a personalized Award of Excellence, milled from solid aluminum and award certificates issued for firms, individuals and clients.

The CA jurors work in multiple screening teams. Each category is divided between the screening teams so each group screens a portion of the entries. Each juror views the entries independently. Any juror can put an entry into the final voting by selecting it.

For finals, all jurors work as a single team. After the judges make their selections, their votes are tallied. A simple majority is usually required for a finalist to be selected a winner.

The work listed above will be featured in the November/December 2013 issue of Communication Arts. A list of all Communication Arts’ Annual Advertising Award winners can be found here.

Publicis Kaplan Thaler Wins Big At Radio Mercury Awards — zzzQuil Sleep Line Wakes Judges

NEW YORK CITY, NY (June 5, 2013) – Publicis Kaplan Thaler received the prestigious Radio Mercury Prize for the zzzQuil “Sleep Line” radio campaign at the 22nd annual awards at New York City’s Highline Ballroom. Years ago, many media experts predicted the death of radio broadcasting. They claimed the MP3 and CD player would far surpass talk radio and top-40 stations in a matter of years. They were wrong.

Radio Mercury AwardToday, radio is still one of the most expensive mediums to advertise on in some major urban markets.  Droves of commuting listeners are still glued to their car radios during rush hour and several radio-only award shows still recognize the best in audio advertising.

The Radio Mercury Awards were established in 1992 to recognize and reward the radio commercials and PSA’s that embody the essence of what radio does best – connect with listeners.  Today, the Radio Mercury Awards is the premiere creative competition for radio.

RadioMercuryAwardPublicis Kaplan Thaler flexed some muscle at this year’s show. Three campaigns, including Vick’s zzzQuil “Sleep Line,” Scope mouthwash “Good Breath is a Good Move” and the non-profit Boostup.org “Pomp and Circumstance,” all made the final cut. zzzQuil’s “Sleep Line” took home an award for its highly entertaining call-in service, which provided curious customers with a variety of boring content to put them to sleep. The awards were enthusiastically accepted by Liz Rosenthal and Lauren Schneidmuller.

Congratulations to all of the PKT teams who worked diligently on these innovative campaigns, but as is normally the case in advertising: on to the next one.

A list of all Radio Mercury Award finalists can be found here and winners can be found here.

Publicis Kaplan Thaler Wins Silver New York Festival’s International Advertising Awards

NEW YORK CITY, NY (May 2, 2013) – Publicis Kaplan Thaler received a Silver World Medal at New York Festival’s International Advertising Awards in the Radio category for Citibank’s “Too Old” spot. Since 1957 the New York Festival has been honoring the best in media; from traditional forms like radio and print, to cutting-edge work on digital and integrated campaigns. Competitors from all over the world submit their work to be reviewed and judged by some of the top creative executives in advertising today.

f52f4697ce7dbd329b1caca795bbba28The award was a much appreciated pat on the back for the vast amount of work PKT creates for one of its largest clients. Fortunately, that wasn’t the only recognition the Manhattan-based agency received at the International Advertising Awards show. A radio advertisement for Procter & Gamble’s Scope mouthwash, “Offensive 2.0,” was also shortlisted and under final consideration for an award. Yet another milestone in the ongoing success of Scope’s brand revamp that was set in motion earlier this year.

Last but not least, Publicis Kaplan Thaler’s very own Chief Creative Officer, Rob Feakins, was a featured speaker and Executive Jury member for the competition. The advertising veteran evaluated several categories and spoke on the subject of how agencies can retain their top talent in a highly predatory environment. Speakers from Leo Burnett, BMF Sydney and Velocebella also spoke on the subject.

With other award shows fast approaching, PKT hopes to bring home as many top finishes as possible with their upcoming campaigns and new clients.

A list of all New York Festival’s International Advertising Award winners can be found here.

Publicis Kaplan Thaler Wins Big at New York/District 2 ADDYs

NEW YORK CITY, NY (April 12, 2013) – Publicis Kaplan Thaler garnered a total of eleven New York ADDYs and six District 2 ADDYs for their work for multiple clients at this year’s ADDY Awards Competition. With over 50,000 submissions per year and three separate shows on the local, regional and national levels, the ADDYs are one of the major award competitions in advertising. This year, PKT’s submissions of their major work over this past year were met with great results.

New York ADDYS

Screen Shot 2013-07-17 at 2.43.16 PMPKT’s work for Citibank, “Clear Checks” OOH, Charmin’s “Waterfalls” TV commercial and Swiffer’s “Man Up” digital shorts all won coveted Gold New York ADDYs. Winning any Gold ADDY in advertising’s most competitive market is an accomplishment — Winning three is certainly a sign PKT is doing things the right way.

Screen Shot 2013-07-17 at 2.38.59 PMPKT also picked up an impressive eight Silver New York ADDYs: Bounty’s “Anthem” Olympic TV commercial, Citi’s “Big Check” and “Sending” TV commercials, Citi’s – “Too Old” radio spot, Scope’s Facebook digital/social media presence, Scope’s “Courage Encouraged” integrated campaign, Street Soccer USA’s – “I PLAY FOR” integrated campaign and Hilton HHonors “Experiences Worth Sharing” print work.

Screen Shot 2013-07-17 at 2.45.06 PMIf that wasn’t enough, Publicis Kaplan Thaler was also recognized with a special Judge’s Award of Excellence for Charmin’s “Waterfalls” TV commercial, a spot consisting of multiple shots of running water encouraging viewers to utilize the commercial time to take a bathroom break.

District 2 ADDYs

Publicis Kaplan Thaler was equally competitive at this year’s District 2 ADDY Competition, adding four gold and two silver awards to their growing collection. District Two encompasses the Washington, DC metro area, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware and represents 16 local clubs.

Screen Shot 2013-07-17 at 2.38.39 PMCitibank’s “Clear Checks” OOH campaign, Scope’s Facebook digital/social media presence, Hilton HHonors “Experiences Worth Sharing” newspaper campaign and Street Soccer USA’s – “I PLAY FOR” integrated campaign all received the coveted Gold ADDY Awards — a major accomplishment when you consider the competition in District 2. All Gold ADDY winners move on to compete for National ADDY Awards.

Screen Shot 2013-07-17 at 2.39.49 PM

Street Soccer USA’s – “I PLAY FOR” integrated campaign also received the special honor of clinching the Phil Dusenberry Award, an award given to the best pro bono work of the year. The Phil Dusenberry Award recognizes agencies who have demonstrated a commitment to doing outstanding work for non-profit organizations. The award is named for the late Phil Dusenberry, whose career included many memorable pro bono campaigns.

“A judge’s award is an incredibly special honor because there is no pre-set category for it,” said Publicis Kaplan Thaler Chairman and Chief Creative Officer Rob Feakins. “It comes about solely because the judges were so impressed by the work in Street Soccer USA, they thought it deserved special recognition. And it is special work because the team didn’t just do the communications (posters, video, facebook, and guerrilla) but they named the teams, designed the team logos, and designed the team uniforms. It was an incredibly, inspirational effort.”

Jay Williams, an Executive Creative Director at Publicis Kaplan Thaler also served as one of the judges on this year’s panel.

Nearly 7.5 Million U.S. Students are Chronically Absent, Missing 18 or More Days of School Each Year

Ad Council and U.S. Army’s BoostUp Campaign Launches New Parent-targeted PSAs Reinforcing the Importance of Consistent School Attendance

Nearly 7.5 million students (K – 12th grade) are chronically absent every school year – missing enough school to put them at severe risk of dropping out or failing to graduate. Chronic absenteeism, which is defined as missing at least 10 percent of school days in a given year, or about 18 days, affects the educational outcomes of millions of students. In order to inspire parents of 5th through 8th graders to recognize the crucial role regular attendance, even in the early years, plays in high school graduation, the U.S. Army and the Ad Council are unveiling a new series of public service advertisements (PSAs) created pro bono by advertising agency Publicis Kaplan Thaler.

WallThumbMed_BoostUpEvery absence, in any grade – excused or not – can impact a child’s academic achievement. As early as 6th grade, missing 18 or more days of school in a year puts a child’s high school graduation at-risk. Missing just two days every month of the school year can allow a child to fall behind, increasing the likelihood of dropping out.

“The U.S. Army recognizes the immense importance of having an educated public and is deeply committed to programs that benefit America’s youth,” said Mark Davis, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Marketing/Director, Army Marketing and Research Group. “We are proud to further our collaboration with the Ad Council to launch these new PSAs on behalf of the BoostUp campaign, continuing our efforts to raise awareness about the dropout crisis and motivate parents to take action on behalf of their children’s education.”

Research shows that students who attend school regularly in their early school years are more likely to learn to read well by the critical third grade milestone; score higher on standardized tests; and graduate and go on to college than students who are chronically absent. Education is crucial to breaking the cycle of poverty, however chronic absenteeism is most prevalent among low-income students. Regular attendance in lower grades is just as important as it is in later years to ensure that a student stays on the path toward graduation.

ConlonPeggy“A day here or a day there may not seem like a lot, but when you add those absences up, there can be dire consequences,” said Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of the Ad Council. “We hope this PSA campaign will shine a light on the problem of chronic absenteeism and educate parents about the importance of their children attending school every day in order for them to succeed academically and stay on the path toward high school graduation.”

The new English and Spanish-language PSAs ask parents to look at the influence they have over their children’s attendance reminding them that every day missed, excused or not, even in middle school, puts their kids’ graduation at risk. Another, community-targeted execution beautifully illustrates the staggering fact that 7,000 high school students drop out every school day by showing thousands of graduation caps falling from the sky. All audiences are directed to the campaign website BoostUp.org to find out how to help the students in their communities succeed and graduate.

Rob Feakins“For us, it’s important that we aren’t simply ad guys, but citizens. And BoostUp is an initiative that is incredibly important to us. We hire young people all of the time. And because of that, there is no greater importance for us than to make sure young people stay in school and keep themselves competitive and prepared for their careers,” said Rob Feakins, Publicis Kaplan Thaler Chief Creative Officer/President.

BoostUp.org offers an assortment of information, resources and ways to get involved including state-by-state dropout statistics, real student stories and information about why students drop out of school and how to help. Parents can access an attendance calculator, courtesy of Get Schooled, where they can chart the impact of their children’s absences on their education. Visitors can also give students a boost by submitting a text or video message of support on Boost Nation, a microsite developed in collaboration with the 26 Seconds BMOR campaign. NFL Philadelphia Eagles’ player David Simms is the latest athlete to upload a video on Boost Nation, to show students across the country that he cares that they stay in school and graduate.

NFL: Philadelphia Eagles at Pittsburgh Steelers“My mother strongly encouraged me to pursue my education, and with caring people in your life, you can reach your goals,” said David Sims safety for the Philadelphia Eagles. “That’s why it’s important we all do our part to inspire at-risk students stay motivated to keep their eyes on the prize and graduate from high school. Give students a ‘boost’ to show your support them and let them know you believe in them.”

Also kicking off today is a social media program designed to further extend the reach of the campaign messages in the online space. Parents, adult influencers, teachers, educational organizations, and advocates are invited to get involved with the BoostUp campaign at
BoostUp.AdCouncil.org.

Since its launch in 2000, the Army and Ad Council’s High School Dropout Prevention campaign has received nearly $657 million in donated media across television, radio, outdoor, print and digital. Per the Ad Council’s model, the PSAs will run and air in advertising time and space that is donated by the media.

Education is a top-priority public service issue for the U.S. Army. In 2000, they partnered with the Ad Council to start “Operation Graduation.” This was a national campaign to motivate and encourage students to graduate high school. In 2006, the Ad Council and the U.S. Army launched BoostUp, a new approach to this dropout prevention campaign. BoostUp targets adults that are interested in their community or in education, as well as parents and peers of at-risk students and connects them to opportunities to provide students with the support they need to stay in school and graduate.
