Publicis Kaplan Thaler Nabs 2 Mashies Awards for Citi Bike App

NEW YORK CITY, NY (October 11, 2013) – Advertising executives, brand marketers and press recently gathered at New York’s Altman building to celebrate the winners of Mashable’s inaugural Mashies awards, honoring the best and most creative work in digital marketing. Publicis Kaplan Thaler received two Mashies, Best Branded App and Best New Brand for their work with Citi Bike, New York City’s bike share program.

Mashies4Todd Wasserman, Mashable’s business editor noted in a recent post, “The rising prominence of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and others has led to a more complex array of media choices, but has also rebooted our traditional view of marketing. This is no longer a one-way conversation with consumers. It is a real-time dialogue in which brands can be upended by an ill-conceived tweet or a rogue YouTube posting. In such an environment, we think marketers deserve kudos for making the right calls and applying creative solutions. That’s why we’ve created The Mashies, which are designed to recognize the very best marketing in social media. The Mashies will highlight thought leadership in such categories as Best Real-Time Marketing, Best Use of Twitter, Best Branded Vine and Best Use of Facebook, among others.”

Mashies Award WinnersGuest judges combed through hundreds of submissions to select the best. Winners were selected by Mashable’s editorial team and an outside panel of industry leaders.

“The fact that Publicis Kaplan Thaler won in the best branded app category against some of the best digital agencies in the country says everything about how far this agency has come and our emerging digital expertise,” said Rob Feakins, Publicis Kaplan Thaler’s Chief Creative Officer and President.

CitiBikeAppNew York City fundamentally changed when over 300 stations and 5,000 bikes were introduced. Since New Yorkers don’t always react well to change, the entire program had to be easy to use, or Citi Bike would never truly be embraced. Publicis Kaplan Thaler created a simple way for riders to locate available bikes wherever they were in the city — The Citi Bike mobile app. At a glance, riders are able to locate nearby stations and the ratio of bikes to empty docks. The app also offers full station details, riding tips, turn-by-turn directions to anywhere in the city and a timer to help riders avoid late fees. The app also utilized a partnership with The New York Times to help riders unlock the city and discover parts of the city they’ve never seen before. Riders can also notify friends where they are headed on Citi Bike.

The highly successful app has reached over 130,000 downloads, garnered positive attention from media outlets like The Huffington Post, The New York Times and Daily News and has allowed riders to travel over 5 million miles.

Aflac Duck & Publicis Kaplan Thaler Honored for Work by Forbes Fortune 500 Social Media Stars

forbes logoCOLUMBUS, GA (May 13, 2013) –  Sometimes being the loudest voice in the room, means being the most memorable voice in the room. No, we are not referring to the “Aflaaaac!” shriek of the Aflac Duck. We are referring to the enormously successful use of social media, making Aflac one of the most recognizable names in insurance and landing it on Forbes’ FORTUNE 500 Social Media List ranking #118. As early adopters of the new technology, Aflac and their agency Publicis Kaplan Thaler began building a massive amount of content behind the flagship TV duck.

AflacDuckTwitterAs the brand champions storytelling, Aflac’s posts on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube revolve around the people their insurance helps and the forever evolving life of the Aflac Duck. In case you hadn’t heard, he has been recovering from debilitating injuries using the insurance provided to him by Aflac.

Results have been stellar. The Aflac company mascot has a verified Twitter account (over 20,000 followers) and more than 380,000 Facebook fans, an impressive number considering “Health insurance isn’t something people want to think about at all,” says Michael Zuna, chief marketing officer for Aflac. “The Duck allows us to give Aflac a voice. He’s very relevant and timely and engaged in America.”

With numbers like these CNN Money rated the Aflac and the Duck as one of nine “Social Media Stars” in the FORTUNE 500. The honor puts Aflac amongst classic brands like General Motors, Coca-Cola and AT&T; quite a feat for an insurance brand.

The Aflac-PKT model has spurred a wave of competitors in the category to follow suit, but they are hard pressed to match the success of Aflac’s brand.

Publicis Kaplan Thaler & ADL’s “Imagine” Surpasses 1M Views

First Non-Profit Ever to Reach YouTube Top 10 Leaderboard

NEW YORK CITY, NY (April 8, 2013) – Once in a while a great ad strikes a deep emotional chord with its audience. It isn’t funny, it isn’t awe inspiring, it just speaks to people in a way they’re not accustomed to being spoken to.  The Anti-Defamation League, in tandem with Publicis Kaplan Thaler created video that achieved this feat.

YouTubeThe 90-second spot chronicled an alternate timeline in which several key figures, including Martin Luther King Jr. and Anne Frank, were never killed in hate crimes. The ADL questions what the world would be like if each lived a full lifetime in defense of their respective causes. Newspaper headlines like “Dr.Martin Luther King Jr, 84, Champions Immigration Reform,” and “Harvey Milk Expands LGBT Equality Globally,” cross the screen as John Lennon’s “Imagine” plays in the background.

In just a few weeks the video quickly surpassed one million views, a YouTube milestone few videos reach; much less advertisements. Not only did “Imagine A World Without Hate” quickly gain viewership, it also became the first non-profit video to ever to crack Youtube’s Top 10 Ads Leaderboard. The soaring success earned national media coverage and ADL’s message reached an exponentially larger audience; furthering their goal of eliminating bigotry for good.

When Film Not Only Builds Awareness — It Creates a Movement

Anti-Defamation League “Imagine a World Without Hate” Film by Publicis Kaplan Thaler Receives National Attention

Several years ago I met Abe Foxman, the brilliant leader of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), and it was always a hope of mine that someday we would work together. Abe is fervently devoted to the ADL’s mission of putting an end to bigotry and hatred throughout the world. It is an amazingly lofty goal, but for the past hundred years, the ADL has come closer to realizing it with their efforts to promote a more respectful and inclusive society.

adlSo when Abe asked us to create a video to celebrate the ADL’s 100th anniversary, I jumped at the opportunity. However, then came the challenging task of deciding just what kind of film to create. During our brainstorming, we sadly remembered all the incredible people who died needlessly because of a hate crime. We imagined just how much they could have accomplished, had they been able to live out their lives in peace and dignity.

And then the idea just burst out – well, what if we celebrated these accomplishments- what if we imagined a world without hate.

And what if we were able to underscore these accomplishments with John Lennon’s iconic song, “Imagine.”

Yoko OnoWell, the rest, really is history. Because of the power of the idea, SONY and Yoko Ono were so moved, they agreed to help to secure the rights to the song, and the estates of all the victims in the film (Martin Luther King, Matthew Shepard, Anne Frank, etc.) graciously allowed their loved ones to be featured in the video.

We had no media funds, so we released the film virally, yet within six days of the launch we reached over 800,000 YouTube hits (and the numbers keep growing), with myriad Tweets, FB shares and posts from Arianna Huffington, Ann Curry, Mashable, Ambassador Susan Rice, David Copperfield, MTV, Ricky Martin, Mark Burnett, Roma Downey, Cory Booker, Moby and Perez Hilton, to name a few.

This is truly a testament to the power of an emotional and disruptive idea, and the passion and vision of the ADL. And who was our demographic target? The entire world of course.

Special kudos to our brilliant creative team, Whitney Pillsbury and Jason Graff, as well as our amazing producer Kirsten Arongino and everyone at PKT, MediaVest , ADL and Regan Communications  who worked so hard to make this film and spread it across the globe!

T-Mobile Gallops Into New Territory: Publicis Seattle & Riney Take Direct Aim at AT&T, Verizon & Sprint

SEATTLE, WA (March 26, 2013) – TMobile SignThe hyper-competitive telecommunications market shares more than a few similarities with the Wild West… intimidating bullies, group pressure, sinister bandits, controlling gang leaders, countless townspeople who feel taken advantage of… and of course, the rogue independent. After years of ruthless competition and a renaissance in mobile technology, only four major carriers are still in their standing: AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile, making the cowboy days of old the perfect metaphor for today’s mobile marketplace. Hot on the heels of the iPhone 5 release, T-Mobile debuted an aggressive Western style advertising campaign from Publicis Seattle and Riney to paint its brand in a new light.

Always devoted to freedom and being different than the “old school” carriers, the first ad features motley crew of four bandits, representing the big four carriers, entering a lonely mountain town with bad intentions on their faces. One of the riders then has a sudden change of heart and decides pushing people around isn’t what he wants to do with his life anymore. He then throws on an all-too-familiar magenta hat, and rides off into the distance with a smile on his face: a simple, yet clever metaphor to describe the strong armed ways of current telecommunications companies.

T-Mobile’s new brand messaging takes direct aim at the competition, and most pointedly, AT&T. The highlight of the brand messaging is crystal clear. T-Mobile now provides data plans that are cheaper, simpler and more transparent, than any other phone carrier. It also enters the iPhone marketplace with an unbeatable offer of a new iPhone5 for $99 down, and no contract. Talk about a bold step to stop the cell phone bullying.

John Legere“These bold moves serve notice that T-Mobile is canceling its membership in the out-of-touch wireless club,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile USA, Inc. “This is an industry filled with ridiculously confusing contracts, limits on how much data you can use or when you can upgrade, and monthly bills that make little sense. As America’s Un-carrier, we are changing all of that and bringing common sense to wireless.”

Currently, T-Mobile has approximately a quarter of the U.S. smartphone market share that AT&T and Verizon enjoy. AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile had 33.3%, 32% and 8.2% of the U.S. smartphone market, respectively, according to a December 2012 Kantar report.

2012 Consumer Electronics Show Showcases Latest Technology InnovationsCommenting on the new commercial, Peter DeLuca, T-Mobile’s Senior Vice President, Brand & Advertising, stated, “It’s metaphorical…we’re moving in a different direction.”  He added, “All the swagger you saw [at the press event], you’ll see in our advertising in all channels.”

In a category where services are nearly identical, the first carrier to finally start appealing to the real desires of its customers may win a considerable chunk of market share. T-Mobile wants its customers to know they’re listening to them. With guidance from Publicis Seattle and Riney in San Francisco since 1997, T-Mobile will continue with a fresh perspective sure to attract masses of unsatisfied AT&T, Verizon and Sprint customers while putting T-Mobile at the forefront of a consumer revolution in telecom.

T-Mobile USA’s innovative wireless products and services help empower people to connect to those who matter most.
